The Experience

Eye Level with the Canopy

Elephant safaris in Corbett are one of the few remaining traditional ways to experience the jungle. Riding a trained working elephant — with a mahout (elephant guide) seated at the neck — you glide through undergrowth that no jeep can navigate. The silence is extraordinary. Animals don't scatter from an elephant the way they do from a motor vehicle.

The elevated vantage — seated in a howdah (mounted platform) some three metres above the ground — gives you sightlines over grass and low scrub that are impossible from a jeep. Tiger sightings from elephant-back are among the most memorable wildlife encounters in India. The intimate proximity that becomes possible is unforgettable.

What to Expect

Your Elephant Safari Experience

1

Pre-Dawn Assembly

Our staff picks you up from Hosteller.in before sunrise. Elephant safaris begin at the kraal (elephant camp) with tea and a briefing from your mahout on safety and etiquette.

2

Mounting the Howdah

You're assisted onto the howdah — a padded wooden platform secured to the elephant's back — from a raised wooden platform. The position is comfortable and stable. Handholds are provided.

3

Entering the Forest

The elephant moves at its own pace, reading the forest. Your mahout guides it through dense grass and forest trails. The pace is gentle and the height gives extraordinary panoramic views.

4

Wildlife Encounters

The mahout is experienced in locating fresh tracks and reading animal signs. When wildlife is sighted, the elephant pauses and you have time to observe and photograph in unhurried silence.

5

Return & Debrief

After 90 minutes, you return to the kraal. Many guests spend additional time with the elephants here — an opportunity to understand the human-elephant relationship and meet the mahout families.
